The candle sculpted in microcrystalline wax recreates the untimely use of candles as a substitute for a private sun, an after-hours sun at arm’s reach as its flame works as a form of ‘exultatia mundi’. The padlock with its vertical arrangement of numeric combinations grants the owner a changeable code that he carries and bears silently in his mind and should not be transmissible to other people, thus maintaining intact the private experience. One can think of a padlock as an object that maintains all other objects, or what could be called a meta-object as it stands outside of the frame of the same objects that it’s trying to protect. The padlock eventually gets weary at the expense of this one-sided protection. Candle and padlock are in direct solidarity in the use of the same formula: they are consumed in order for them to consummate.
